Shanghai-based 01.AI (founded by Kai-Fu Lee) released the Yi series as open-weights, bilingual (Chinese / English) models. Yi 1.5 34B (May 2024) is the headline chat model under Apache 2.0.
Yi VL 34B (January 2024) is one of the strongest open vision-language models for Chinese-text-in-images workloads. Both the chat and VL variants ship with permissive licensing.
