History & context

xAI's Grok 1 was released as open weights in March 2024 under Apache 2.0 — a 314B-parameter mixture-of-experts model. Largely a research artefact at that scale (most users will run smaller models for production), but useful as a permissively-licensed reference for MoE work.

Grok 2 weights were released in 2025, also under Apache 2.0. xAI's strategy of open-sourcing the previous-generation model when shipping a new one mirrors the pattern Mistral and Meta have followed.
